Business Plans For Small Businesses

Business plans for small businesses are essential before you invest your time and money. There are many uses for this tool. Financing is the first thing that comes to mind when people think of a business plan. But when starting a business or exploring your ideas, the main use of a business plan is to decide whether your idea is even worth pursuing.

A good plan considers things that you probably neglected in your first thoughts of "WOW!", what a great idea. So when do you start writing a business plan. And the answer is the sooner the better. The next question about business plans for small businesses is…

Where Do You Start?

A business plan is a tool for organizing your entire business idea, laying out all the details and weighing the benefits and risks. That means you have to find a lot of disjointed information from many different places. This information needs to be organized so it makes sense to a lot of people with different backgrounds.

The first place to start is to learn what information that you need. You can find that out on the internet by searching for business plans. You'll find examples of business plans for small businesses, outlines, and software to write business plans. I have found that The Small Business Association is an excellent place to read up on business plans. They have everything from samples to links to any government resource needed to get started putting put you plan together.

How Do I Proceed?

As mentioned earlier, a business plan contains a lot of information that must be organized into easy to understand meaningful data. You will use your plan for many things as you build your business. First you will use it to convince yourself that you can build a viable business. Then you need to convince people to provide financing for your business. Speaking of investing in the business a good, well thought out plan can be used to sell key talent to become your employees.

I have found software that uses an interview to walk you through the planning process most useful. The software ensures that you answer questions to gather all pertinent information. It also organizes your information into paragraphs, tables, and charts to ensure it is readable and easy to present. A software package I like is Palo Alto Software's Business Plan Pro. It is well worth the money to keep your head on straight.

When Am I Finished?

A good business plan is a blueprint for your business. Like a blueprint for a house, the business plan provides the specifications for starting, running and maintaining your business. But unlike a blueprint for a house, your business plan does not get filed away after your house is built. A good business plan is a living document and will constantly change along with your business. Get into the habit of regularly reviewing your results against the plan and updating the plan based on the reality of your environment.

In other words, business plans for small businesses are never finished. Your worked hard putting your business plan together, use it to your benefit.
